Not to us, Lord, not to us

Not to us, LORD, not to us
but to your name be the glory,
because of your love and faithfulness.

(Ps 115:1)

Syllogistically speaking…

  1. Were it not for God’s love and faithfulness, all humankind would be exalted.
  2. God’s love and faithfulness precede all humankind.
  3. Therefore, all humankind is not exalted.

And so, the Psalmist concludes “it is we who extol the LORD, both now and forevermore. Praise the LORD” (Ps 115:18).

Dear humankind,
“Know thyself!”
Sincerely,
—Socrates

One Comment on “Not to us, Lord, not to us

  1. Yes! I remember early in my walk with the Lord where Satan tempted me with “to know myself was to know god”. Amazingly, I recognized it immediately as I had no illusions of grandeur but rather the opposite. Thus, inset into the concept of knowing oneself WITHOUT knowing God first and without honoring, worshipping and praising God first and foremost, humanity tends to worship self.

What we find within ourselves is primarily the grime and filth that must be washed by the Word and cleansed by Christ’s compassion. Without God in our lives we cannot rise up to walk as Jesus walked and do the works that He did. It is only through Christ that we can accomplish good, true godly love in this world.

    Good word this morning. :)
