I spoke with my good friend from Baker Books yesterday while driving home and he said that he wished he could sit down with N. T. Wright and ask him just one question. I won’t tell you what that question was, but that got me thinking. If I could sit down with Jesus and ask Him one question, what would that question be? If you could sit down with Jesus and ask him one question, what would your question be?

I used to think about this kind of question a lot. I’m always afraid that if I didn’t ask it right I might just get a question in response and I’d be back to square one but now with two questions on my mind. I then realized so many of my questions would be rather trivial. Though I would be tempted to ask why my son died at only 23 I don’t think I would ask that. In the end I think I would ask something like “What do I need to hear?” This is all on the condition I would be able to form a question in my head once I was in his presence!
Louis – IMO there is great wisdom in your question. It’s one we should all be asking everyday. I pray that God would prepare our hearts for the answer, so that we receive it with joy.
I used to think a lot about this kind of question too. My guess is nothing else will really matter when we finally do see him face to face. We’ll be so enthralled with Him!
I did have a fleeting thought last Sunday though. We’re going through the book of Genesis and during the sermon I wondered why God allowed Satan in the garden to begin with. If He had only kept him out things would have been so different! But, like Louis said, I suspect that all our questions, in light of the glory of Jesus, will seem rather trivial!

Assuming the final state of heaven-plus-earth has not begun and my life as it now is continues, I would ask: “Jesus, could you please give me just a little more will and skill to live out the life you have called me to so your glory is displayed to others who so desperately need you?” I suppose I could just ask him this right now, however. ‘-)
