Craig Blomberg (at Denver Seminary and served on the Translation Committee for the updated NIV) has a fascinating entry on translating 1 Corinthians 6:9, as well as some insights on why the updated NIV was changed.
“Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men. . .”
(1 Corinthians 6:9, updated NIV)
Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders. . .”
(1 Corinthians 6:9, 1984 NIV)
See his “Perverts, Pederasts, Prostitutes Or…?”.
Given the zealous acceptance of homosexuality in American culture, I’m very interested in his follow-up post on the implications as he unpacks 1 Corinthians 6:10.
. . .nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
[Note: The expression “kingdom of God” serves as bookends, opening and closing this pericope. Is this for emphasis? Hum. . . .]
Very interesting post. Thanks for the link.
